GPON vs EPON — which for your FTTH?
Practical differences between GPON and EPON for Pakistani FTTH operators — and when each makes sense.
GPON and EPON are both passive optical network technologies. From the outside they solve the same problem — carrying data from an OLT to many ONTs over a shared fiber. On closer look, they differ in performance, ecosystem and cost profile in ways that matter for your build.
The high-level differences
- GPON: 2.488 Gbps downstream / 1.244 Gbps upstream; carrier heritage
- EPON: symmetric 1.25 Gbps; simpler protocol
- GPON: wider ONT vendor spread in Pakistan
- EPON: strong in some pockets, historically cheaper
When we recommend GPON
New builds where you want a longer runway (XG-PON upgrade path), a wider ONT vendor pool, and better support from tier-1 platforms.
When EPON still makes sense
Retrofit projects where the existing ONT base is EPON and swapping isn't economical, or specific vendor deployments where EPON is the cheaper practical path.
